Writing Center

The Writing Center is a program in the Learning Resource Center (LRC). We offer one-on-one and small group tutoring on essays, reports, research papers, application letters, scholarship essays, cover letters, resumes, CVs, memos, and other written work. We also offer writing and grammar workshops and a tutor-guided study hall service. All Writing Center services are available on an appointment or drop-in basis.

Tutoring

Appointment-based and drop-in tutoring is available in-person, online, or through Canvas submissions beginning Week 2 of the semester through Finals Week.

Writing Center tutors receive two semesters of training provided by the LRC. The LRC is certified through the College Reading and Learning Association (), an international tutoring organization. The LRC's CRLA certification process sets an internationally accepted standard of tutor training for the purpose of providing tutors with skills, recognition, and positive reinforcement for successful work. LRC programs and services are free to all Cal Poly Pomona undergraduate and graduate students.

Making the Most of Your Tutoring Session

Tutoring reinforces independent learning. Tutors do not teach class material or do their tutees’  homework. To ensure your tutoring session is effective and productive, please follow these guidelines:

  • attempt pre-writing, drafting, revising, or proofreading before attending your tutoring session;
  • attend the session prepared with specific questions or concerns to be addressed;
  • arrive to the tutoring session with all necessary materials (a printed copy of your written draft, writing prompt, pre-writing, syllabus, writing implement, etc.);
  • expect to be actively involved in discussing your writing, the prompt, and whatever else may be relevant in the session;
  • ask for clarification on anything that does not make sense or on writing strategies and skills  that may have been covered too quickly.
