'Cultivation Celebration' to Showcase Student Innovation and Community Resilience

Tomatoes on a ScaleCal Poly Pomona’s student-run greenhouse is opening its doors to the public on Sunday, April 27, for “Cultivation Celebration,” an immersive, hands-on event that explores how gardens can grow more than food by cultivating knowledge, community and environmental resilience.

Hosted at the Cal Poly Pomona Nursery and Farm Store from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the event is produced by students as the culmination project in the Urban Agriculture Business Models (PLT 4985) class taught by Plant Science Lecturer Kathleen Blakistone. The celebration highlights student-led innovation in sustainable agriculture and invites the public to engage with projects tackling food security, ecological restoration, and culturally rooted growing practices.

Activities include workshops on companion planting, pollinator habitats, and regenerative techniques, along with a plant sale featuring seasonal starts, native plants and specialty crops grown by students. Certified arborist Tom Guarneri (’19, plant science) of Cambium Tree Experts will deliver a featured talk on fruit tree care for home and community orchards. Guests can also tour the student-run greenhouse and view an insect collection curated by students.
