Mónica Guzmán’s “I Never Thought of It That Way,” a toolkit and guide for navigating difficult conversations, has been selected for Cal Poly Pomona’s 2025-26 Common Read

The Common Read is a part of the university’s First Year Experience courses. In its 19th year, this community initiative encourages all students, staff, and faculty to read and engage with the same book.

A journalist, author and grassroots organizer, Guzmán writes about how curiosity can bridge our most painful divides. In “I Never Thought of It That Way,” she draws from her experience as a Mexican immigrant and the daughter of conservative parents to explore how people can engage with others who hold different views. Through interviews and dialogue practices, Guzmán examines the role of curiosity in understanding others and navigating disagreement.

“The tools Guzmán shares help us really listen, understand where others are coming from, and connect across differences,” said Dora Lee, assistant vice president for academic engagement and success. “We hope students take away just how powerful curiosity, empathy and healthy discourse can be — both in the classroom and in everyday life.”

Jason Wang, visitor experience counselor at the Office of Outreach, Recruitment and Educational Partnerships, nominated the book. He found that the books real-world examples were helpful in facilitating discussions across differences of opinion.

“The author does a great job weaving in different perspectives and stories to build empathy for people who hold different beliefs,” Wang said. “First-year students are exposed to a wider range of opinions and beliefs as they transition to college, and being able to bridge divides is more relevant than ever.”

In the FYE courses that the eight colleges, the University Library and  offer, first-year students spend time getting to know their major, exploring campus resources and learning what being a college student entails.

In addition to reading “I Never Thought of It That Way,” FYE students can participate in an annual writing contest on the book’s themes. They will also participate in a Signature Polytechnic Experience (PolyX) within their FYE courses and present their work at the fall and spring PolyX Showcases. Information about these opportunities will be available on the FYE website.

Established in 2007, the FYE community has grown with new students, faculty and staff engaging in its programming. The Common Read is organized by the Office of Student Success and the First Year Experience Committee.
