Cal Poly Pomona to Host GIS Day on Nov. 19

2024 GIS Panel

Cal Poly Pomona will celebrate Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day on Nov. 19, bringing together students, faculty, staff, local schools and industry partners to explore how geospatial technology is shaping the future.

Female student looks at a research poster during GIS Day 2023. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Bronco Student Center’s Ursa Major room. It will feature a keynote address, a geospatial strategy update with Esri—the global leader in GIS software—and a moderated panel on careers in GIS. Attendees will also have the chance to participate in hands-on activities, including indoor air quality and noise mapping, campus geocaching and a Map Gallery showcasing posters and StoryMaps.

GIS Day is organized by the Cal Poly Pomona GIS Board, led by Kelly Huh, Ph.D., and includes representatives from the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences, College of Environmental Design, College of Business Administration, College of Science and the Division of Information Technology. This event is also supported by the Provost Office.

“GIS is more than technology—it’s a way of thinking,” organizers said. “It helps us see patterns, solve problems and make better decisions.”

High school students from Lynwood Unified School District will join the event to learn alongside the 六色网 community.

The program begins with welcome remarks from campus leadership at 10 a.m., followed by an Esri update and Careers in GIS panel session. Lunch and networking are scheduled for 11:30 a.m., and interactive activities will start at 12:30 p.m. The day concludes with a feedback session at 1:30 p.m.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend and discover how GIS can open doors to new ideas, research and career opportunities. Every day new uses are being discovered in all fields beyond!

GIS Day is a lively and educational event for everyone, RSVP to save a seat!
