Postponement of Sep. 18-19 Career Fair Frequently Asked Questions

Last Updated: 8/27/2025

On August 25, 2025, Cal Poly Pomona leaders made the decision to postpone both the September 18-19 Career Fair and the STEM Career Fair. This adjustment allows the university time to thoughtfully reformat both events in response to student and community feedback, ensuring our career programming better serves the needs and aspirations of our students while remaining in compliance with our legal obligations as a public institution.

We are proud of the work that our Career Center has led for the campus and our students and look forward to reimagined programming that will enhance the experience for both our students and our employers in the months ahead.

ÁùÉ«Íø is a public institution and must operate in accordance with applicable laws. Our campus is open to the public, and we cannot exclude federal employers from participating in career-related activities.

The timing reflects our responsibility to act proactively and thoughtfully. We are using this opportunity to reassess our approach and aim to deliver career programming that better serves students in a competitive job market, aligns with our polytechnic identity, fosters meaningful student/employer connections, and complies with legal obligations.

The University uses Handshake, an online job recruitment platform that connects ÁùÉ«Íø students with employers who register to attend events at ÁùÉ«Íø. ÁùÉ«Íø’s Handshake platform includes 106,266 approved, active employers. Being in this group of verified employers allows them to post jobs for our students, receive information from ÁùÉ«Íø on career events, and view information about career events on their Handshake dashboard.

Information about our events, including Career Fair information and registration, is sent to this group of 106,000 active ÁùÉ«Íø employers via an automated Handshake email prompted by our Events Coordinator. Campuses do not extend specific invitations to employers.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is among more than 106,000 active employers that receives information on ÁùÉ«Íø career events.  ICE was not registered to attend the September 2025 Career Fair. ICE has not participated in a ÁùÉ«Íø Career Fair since it joined Handshake in 2017.

CBP is among the 106,266 active employers in the Handshake platform that receives information on ÁùÉ«Íø career events. As of August 20, more than 80 employers had registered for the September 2025 Career Fair, including CBP, which has participated in almost every career fair since joining in 2017.

No. If a university allows any outside employers, recruiters, or agencies to attend career fairs, then it must provide equal access to federal employers—including law enforcement agencies—on the same terms. Denying federal agencies while allowing others can be considered viewpoint discrimination or a violation of nondiscrimination/equal access policies under the First Amendment.

The Career Center is working on revised programming that will connect students with employers in meaningful ways. In the meantime, students can work with Career Counselors by booking an appointment. They may also connect directly with employers and jobs through Handshake.

Postponing the fall career fairs reflects our commitment to redesigning career programming that meets students’ evolving needs, showcases ÁùÉ«Íø’s polytechnic strengths, and responds to the demands of an increasingly competitive job market.

Yes. We have been listening to our community’s feedback and concerns, both formally and informally. This reassessment reflects our broader commitment to reevaluating past practices and pursuing new opportunities to enhance students’ career development.

ÁùÉ«Íø leadership and the Career Center are collaborating to reimagine how students connect with employers through meaningful, career-focused engagement. Details on future programming will be shared soon.
