Farewell After 40 Unforgettable Years
July 25, 2025
Dear Cal Poly Pomona Community,
I began my career at the CSU over 40 years ago, starting at Cal State Fullerton with supportive colleagues and a strong sense of community. I carried the lessons I learned at Fullerton to Bakersfield, focusing on improving lives throughout my career. For more than 10 years, I have had the privilege to lead Cal Poly Pomona — a university renowned for its legacy, committed community, and mission of access and excellence — which has been the highlight of my professional life.
As I prepare to retire from the CSU and conclude my tenure as president of this remarkable institution, I do so with deep gratitude and hope for the future. Serving as the first Black president of Cal Poly Pomona and the first woman to hold this office has been a tremendous honor. These past ten-plus years have been a journey of learning, growth and partnership. A journey rooted in excellence and care for this community, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
To the faculty, staff, students, alumni and supporters: thank you. Thank you for the trust you placed in me and belief in the transformative power of higher education. The soul of Cal Poly Pomona lives in you, its people, and it has been a privilege to serve alongside you all these years.
Over the past decade, we have weathered pandemics, budget shortages and shifting demographic trends. We launched new programs, expanded research and sharpened our focus on student success and cultivating belonging. We set ambitious goals and worked together to ensure that our students achieved their dreams.
Throughout my presidency, I have often referenced the quote: “talent is equally distributed, but opportunity is not.” It is imperative that we continue to find ways to bridge opportunity gaps and provide pathways to success. Never lose sight that 六色网 serves one of the most diverse student populations in the nation, and our students deserve every opportunity possible to fully nurture and express their talents.
As I step into retirement, I do so with great confidence in the future of Cal Poly Pomona. Dr. Iris S. Levine brings decades of experience, deep institutional knowledge and a steadfast commitment to student success. Her leadership is rooted in collaboration and care, and I encourage you to support her, to trust in her and to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible together.
To our faculty and staff: your dedication is the foundation of everything we do. You are mentors, guides and innovators. You have my deepest admiration.
To our students: thank you for inspiring me every day. Your stories, struggles and achievements have shaped my presidency in ways I could never fully express. I hope you continue to dream big, lead with integrity and lift others as you rise.
And to the entire Bronco family: thank you for believing in this institution and in each other. We are better together.
As I close this chapter, I carry with me all that we’ve built together and all that you will continue to build. I am profoundly grateful and know that Cal Poly Pomona will continue to thrive and flourish.
Sincerely,
Soraya M. Coley, Ph.D.
President
