Michael Miser is committed to addressing inequities he has witnessed firsthand and wants to shape policies that create lasting change. A former foster youth and U.S. Navy veteran, he brings both lived experience and discipline to his work as a leader and advocate for communities in need. He sees policy reform as his way to make a difference. Through internships with the Anthony and Jeanne Pritzker Family Foundation, the National Foster Youth Institute and the Office of Representative Adam Smith, he has worked on housing policies, educational initiatives and legislative measures to impact those in need. Serving as a peer mentor for the Renaissance Scholars program while working with communities across campus to promote inclusivity have prepared Michael to take on leadership roles to uplift others. He credits Professor Dan Lewis as a mentor who has “consistently opened doors that I previously did not know could open, encouraging me to step through every single one of them.” Michael plans to earn a J.D., writing and enacting transformative policies, and eventually run for public office, carrying forward his belief that leadership is a responsibility to improve systems for those they serve.
