The Early Childhood Studies Department is committed to preparing future educators to make a meaningful impact in the lives of children from birth through age eight. Our bachelor's program offers three distinct pathways tailored to support diverse career goals: the General Teaching Option (ADT in Child Development), the Multilingual Teaching Option (ADT in Child Development- support the growing Dual immersion programs), and the P–3rd Grade Teaching Option (ADT in Elementary Teacher Education). Grounded in our mission, the Early Childhood program equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to support young children and their families. We foster a student-centered, active learning environment where theory meets practice through a social justice lens. Our commitment to inclusivity and diversity is central, as we advocate for equity and representation across ethnic/racial, gendered, and other historically marginalized groups in education and society.

The Liberal Studies (LS) Department prepares undergraduates for TK-6 elementary education, with options to teach up to 9th grade with additional authorizations. The program provides comprehensive subject matter preparation approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) so that students enter elementary and special education credential programs equipped with 21st century knowledge and skills to creatively engage diverse youth in the arts, humanities, and natural and social sciences.  LS majors earn Elementary Subject Matter (ESM) competency, and their degree waives the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET), which is necessary for entrance into a teacher credential program. Additionally, LS majors can choose from the department’s unique education minors to deepen their skill set: Science Education or Sustainability Education. The Science Education minor provides the coursework required to earn a supplementary authorization to teach up to 9th grade science and the Sustainability Education minor provides a flexible pathway for students interested in incorporating sustainability-focused topics into their classrooms. The LS Department maintains its enduring commitment to social justice; sustainability; and the well-being of individuals, communities, and environments.
