The English minor is a flexible program of frequently-taught courses easily scheduled with your major courses. Take the Introduction to Literary studies, two lower division electives, and three upper division electives—all literature, all the time.
The English minor furnishes you with the analytic and writing skills employers seek, as well as the knowledge of culture expected of executives and others in leadership positions. If you plan to pursue advanced study in law, medicine, business or academia, the English minor can make you a stronger candidate for admission to competitive programs, since literature courses require frequent writing and discussion, and good written and verbal communication skills are an integral part of most post-baccalaureate work.

The official working language (with English) of many international organizations, including the UN, French has a long history as the lingua franca of diplomacy, culture and the arts worldwide. Large parts of Africa and the Americas speak French today. French political involvement in Russia, Latin America, Western Europe, North America, parts of Africa, and parts of Southeast Asia has decisively influenced the cultures and politics of these regions. French cuisine, literature, music, dance, and political philosophy have shaped the modern world. Because of this history, the French minor complements many fields, from Hospitality Management to History, Political Science, Art History, International Business, and beyond.

The minor in Spanish provides an ideal complement to a wide range of majors: Business, Liberal Studies, Sociology, Agriculture, Hospitality Management, and many others. Students must take SPN 2130: Spanish Intermediate Composition, either the heritage speaker track or the second language learner Intermediate-level Spanish language course, and four upper-division courses. Of these, one must be from Group A (linguistics and language) and one from Group B (literature/cultural studies). The two additional upper division courses chosen may be chosen from either Group A or B according to the student's professional and personal language goals. The Spanish minor thus allows for a great deal of flexibility and can be highly tailored.
