2025 Ethnic & Women鈥檚 Studies (EWS) Awards
A $500 award has been established in memory of Charles C. Irby, the first chairperson of the Ethnic & Women’s Studies Department. Each year the EWS Department presents this prestigious award at the Senior Symposium to a GEMS student demonstrating academic excellence in any area of Ethnic and/or Women’s Studies, and Community Organizing/Service. Special attention should be given to: 1) your research interests, motivation for and commitment to graduate study; 2) OR your approaches to community engagement, asset building and public advocacy. Also discuss those graduate programs OR community organizations you are interested in pursuing and why. In addition to your essay, please provide any supporting documentation, such as graduate/job acceptance letter and application materials, involvement in research programs and community engagement, conference presentations, exemplary papers/essays, and evidence of leadership positions. This award is for GEMS graduating seniors who are planning to attend graduate school or pursue a career in social services/community organizing within the next two years. A minimum GEMS GPA of 3.5 is required.
A $400 award will be given to a student with outstanding scholarly work during the 2024-2025 academic year. Scholarship may be demonstrated in areas such as research, presentation of research at a conference, or at the GEMS Senior Capstone Symposium. This award is open to junior or senior GEMS majors. A min. GEMS GPA of 3.2 is required.
A $300 award will be given to a student for outstanding community service and/or activism at Cal Poly Pomona and the surrounding community. Open to all GEMS majors. A min. GEMS GPA of 3.0 is required.
A $300 award will be given to a student for exemplifying a GEMS scholar. The student must demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to Women’s issues. Open to GEMS majors, with a Women’s Studies concentration or minor. A min. GEMS GPA of 3.2 is required.
A $300 award will be given to a student involved in Native American research, community service learning and/or on-campus work with Native American communities. Open to GEMS majors with a Native American Studies concentration or minor. A min. GEMS GPA of 3.00 is required.
Two $150 book awards are available for GEMS first year students, sophomores, and juniors who have demonstrated academic excellence and commitment to the values and mission of the EWS Department. A min. GEMS GPA of 2.75 is required.
Requirements for all awards
A two-page essay addressing the following question: What qualifies you to be the recipient of the EWS award(s) for which you are applying? Please note the criteria for each award and make comments specific to the award(s) you are seeking. If applicable, please also include your resume or CV. You may also (optionally) provide up to 5 supplemental pages of certifications and evidence. Include all documents in one document. Either Word or PDF.
Completed applications are due Friday, May 2nd, 2025.
