Faculty Info for Flex Agreements

What are Flexible Agreements?

Flexible Agreements are the agreements initiate by a DRC student approved for either or both Modified Attendance and Extended Deadlines. These accommodations do not go into effect until the student and instructor have discussed, agreed upon a specific plan and the student has submitted the agreement through myDRC. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate this process.

If the Instructor does not respond after (2) DRC outreach emails (14 days), the agreement will be in effect. This allows the university to remain in compliance with disability legislation.

Extended Deadlines

This accommodation is designed to provide flexibility around class deadlines in order to specifically address barriers related to chronic physical or mental condition which results in significant challenges to completing assignments by their due date.

This accommodation is not designed to support:

  • Unlimited acceptance of late work
  • Extra time to complete each class assignment in every class
  • Chronic personal organization and time management difficulties
  • Non-disability related reasons (e.g., car trouble), seasonal illness (e.g., cold/flu), or health conditions that are not documented with the DRC

Modified Attendance

Some students with chronic health conditions that are episodic in nature and periodically worsen or unexpectedly "flare up" may experience legitimate barriers to class attendance and may need occasional exceptions to the class attendance policy.

Attendance accommodations do NOT apply to the following:

  • Consistent absences due to frequently occurring appointments (e.g., weekly therapy);
  • Absences due to chronic personal organization and time management difficulties;
  • Absences due to non-disability related reasons (e.g., car trouble), seasonal illness (e.g., cold/ flu), or health conditions that are not documented with the DRC.

How to Complete Flexible Agreements on myDRC

The student will initiate a flexible agreement through their myDRC account. Once submitted, the instructor will receive an email notification asking them to review the request. Read our step-by-step instructions on on the myDRC portal.

If there is no response to a student's initiate agreement on the myDRC portal, the students proposed agreement is in effect after email attempts to the instructor to review the agreement.

DRC Consultations

When in doubt, request a consultation with the DRC to determine if the flexible agreement would result in fundamental alterations to the course design. Instructors should never deny a student’s eligible accommodation. Be prepared to provide a rationale about how the flexible agreement is either not educationally feasible or how adjustments would result in changes to essential components of the course.
