Welcome to May 2025!
Welcome to May, Everyone!
The finish line is in sight!
As the school year winds down and finals draw near, we want to remind you to pause and recognize your progress. Every step you’ve taken this semester, whether it has been big or small, has mattered.
This time of the school year can feel overwhelming, but you are capable, prepared, and not alone. Prioritize rest when you need it, lean on your support systems, and take things one day at a time.
You’re almost there, and we’re rooting for you every step of the way.
With encouragement and support, The Disability Resource Center Team
DRC Testing & Finals
Here are some quick things to know about finals week at DRC:
- Testing Locations – We will have testing at both DRC and the Test Center. About 1-2 days before your test you will get a reminder email which will include the location you will be testing at. Make sure you know where to go for each exam. Locations for each exam can also be viewed on your myDRC portal once the reminder has been sent.
- Extended Testing Hours – DRC will proctor exams from 8:00am to 8:00pm Monday through Thursday, and 8:00am to 4:00pm on Friday of finals week.
- Time Slots – DRC only has 3 start times for finals week: 8:00am, 12:00pm, 4:00pm* to ensure students will have a reduced distraction environment all exams must start at these times.
- Testing Time- The length of the exam may initially be shown as zero minutes on your reminder email or on the portal. Once the professor has given us the exam time, we will add it and update your test time accordingly.
Do you have an Online Final via Canvas, Connect, Kudu or another website?
- If you schedule your proctored, online exam at the DRC don’t forget to check the box on your test request that it is an online test so we can plan accordingly.
- Please remind your instructors that you are requesting your accommodations and let them know of the start time if you are scheduled to take it at the DRC as this time will be different than when the class starts their finals.
- If you plan on using your own computer at the DRC, please add a note to your test request so we can plan accordingly. Please know that we cannot guarantee you will have access to an outlet so please come with your device charged.
What to expect when you check-in for an exam?
- DRC recommends you arrive 10-15 minutes early to your scheduled exam time and line up outside the front door.
- Once check-in begins, students with online exams will be checked in first, the remainder of students are checked-in in the order of the line. All students lined up by the start time, will be considered on time, and your test time will start once you are completely checked-in.
- Additional time will not be added for late arrivals or for students who do not finish within their allotted time.
- Students should have all testing materials that will be used to test out and ready to go before check-in. All other personal belongings should be put away in a backpack or bag which will be put in the locker area. Please confirm with instructors ahead of time what materials are allowed.
- Students are responsible for providing their own pencils, erasers, Scantrons, Blue Books, or other required testing materials.
- Please note that DRC does not have any more Scantrons, you will need to bring your own.
*On Fridays, the last time slot is 12:00pm.

Best Spots on Campus
Have you ever been in between classes, not knowing where to go or what to do?
Here is a spot where you can study and work on homework in a comfortable outdoor atmosphere:
College of Environmental Design (In the middle of Bldg. 7):
This peaceful courtyard is a great place to relax, catch up on homework, or review notes before your next class. Surrounded by shade, it offers a calm outdoor atmosphere that feels far from the hustle of the rest of campus. It’s conveniently located next to a small café where you can grab coffee or a snack, and it’s also steps away from the BioTrek Learning Center, which has a relaxing garden area perfect for a quick mental reset. Whether you’re prepping for exams or just want a quiet place to unwind, this spot has the right balance of comfort, convenience, and calm to help you recharge and stay focused.

Fun Fact:
Did you know that...
"Did you know that the football huddle was invented at Gallaudet University, a college for the deaf in Washington, D.C.? In 1894, quarterback Paul Hubbard and his teammates used hand signals to call plays. To prevent opposing teams from reading their signs, they began gathering in a huddle before each play. This innovative strategy not only helped keep their signals confidential but also revolutionized the way football is played today."

Meet the DRC Dr. Andrea Reyes
Meet Dr. Andrea Reyes, DRC's Interim Director!
Meet Dr. Reyes (she/her/hers), Interim Director of the Disability Resource Center. Dr. Reyes is a proud CSU alum with a strong background in higher education and student affairs. Dr. Reyes has built her career around supporting students and creating inclusive environments. Her journey in higher education started as a student leader and led her to earn a doctorate focused on graduate students with disabilities. Whether she is presenting at national conferences, exploring the world, or hanging out with her golden doodle, Ruby, Dr. Reyes is all about connection, growth, and breaking barriers.
What do you love most about your role at the Disability Resource Center?
"One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is working directly with students, including seeing them succeed and realize the impact of the support and accommodations available to them. I also really enjoy working with this team. We have an incredible team that genuinely cares about the students and the work they do. They all have a great work ethic, and I appreciate supporting and advocating for such a passionate group."
What advice would you give students who are hesitant to seek support?
"My biggest advice is to reach out early, even when things are going well. You don't want to be in the middle of midterms or finals and be actively struggling. It's much easier when you know the resources and accommodations before it gets to that point. So when it becomes challenging, you can use them. Students sometimes forget that accommodations are not retroactive. So it's really important to make sure your accommodations are activated.
Also, utilize resources that are underutilized. We have DRC study rooms, BAM peer mentorship, and other great resources through our wellbeing cluster, like CAPS and the CARE Center. There's so much information during orientation, it's easy to forget. So feel free to come ask for help when things are good, so you have the information when things get hard."
A fun fact about Dr. Reyes!
“I love world travel; it's one of my favorite things to do, and I'm always ready for an adventure. One of the most unforgettable experiences was visiting an elephant sanctuary in Thailand. I've always had a special love for elephants, so that moment was incredibly meaningful. I'm also a big foodie and enjoy discovering new cuisines; really, I’m open to trying just about any kind of food."
Outside of work, what do you like to do for fun?
“I love spending time with my golden doodle, Ruby; taking her on walks is one of our favorite things to do. I also really enjoy being with my family and friends, whether we’re just hanging out or exploring something new. Lately, I’ve been hooked on the new season of Love on the Spectrum on Netflix; it might be my favorite season yet. When I’m not watching shows, I love visiting gardens and museums, just wandering around and taking it all in. We even have a membership to the Arboretum in Arcadia so we can soak up the sunshine and enjoy relaxing walks whenever we want."
What book or resource has influenced you in your work?
"I've really enjoyed AHEAD - Association on Higher Education and Disability. It has a lot of resources on how to support students with disabilities, including legal cases, trends, and more. I go to it often for information and knowledge about what's going on in the field. I actually presented at one of their national conferences on student equity and intersectionality identities. It was an incredible opportunity to present your work and the practices you do at your institution, and to see how others connect with it and ask questions."
What’s something you’re currently excited about at the center?
"We are currently in the process of updating our Disability Ally Training for faculty and staff. It's hopefully going to be done by summer 2025 and shared with the community next year. It will help train folks on disability awareness with different activities, like scenarios and myths. I think it's needed.
This past year, we also educated staff on how to support neurodiverse students. We did a training for our Wellbeing cluster to help neurodivergent students build social skills. That's something I was really proud of this year."
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
As a manager, teleporting would be great because I could be everywhere at once. More importantly, I'd want the power to make all environments truly accessible. That includes automatic doors, accessible seating, ramps, and more. It would be incredibly helpful if everything were accessible.

Meet the DRC Nicki Airth
Meet Nicki Airth, Interim Associate Director!
Meet Nicki Airth, Interim Associate Director of the Disability Resource Center. Nicki is a mom of four and has been married for 28 years. She is a huge Disney fan and enjoys fishing, building Lego’s and being in nature. She has traveled all over the United States and has currently been to 42 states via road trips. Nicki's goal is to connect and assist students through their journey of higher education. Nicki finds her job at the Resource Center enjoyable and fulfilling because of the impact the DRC provides.
What do you love most about your role at the Disability Resource Center?
I love connecting with the students, no matter the circumstance, whether they’re in a good or difficult place. I always want my office to be a safe space for them to be authentically who they are. They can freely express themselves. There are so many students who face a lack of support and academic barriers. I see my role as the voice that speaks out when it is necessary. Especially when there are faculty members who are not providing accommodations appropriately.
What advice would you give students who are hesitant to seek support?
For many reasons, it’s common for students to hesitate to reach out for support. Sometimes, the office can feel overwhelming, or the age differences can seem intimidating. But I always say, if all you can do is send an email to start the conversation, then just send the email. “Do what you can do.” If I encounter hesitant students, I often say, Let’s do it together. It is an excellent start if a student is brave enough to complete the application. We can’t offer support if we don’t know there’s a need. Everyone here wants to help. In my two and a half years here, I’ve seen that everyone in the office is genuinely committed to supporting students.
A fun fact about Nicki!
“I love to laugh--the kind that’s belly laughing.” I genuinely enjoy laughing. I think laughing is healing. A lot is going on in the world, and you can easily get sucked in. Laughter gives you this perspective that lightens the space, which can sometimes be heavy.
Outside of work, what do you like to do for fun?
“I like to be in nature.” Every year, my family goes fishing. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to go for the last two years, but I’m eager to return.
What book or resource has influenced you in your work?
Brant Hansen's book Unoffendable explores how easily we can become offended by others and react impulsively without clarity. The book highlights the importance of not letting the people who offend us dictate our response by keeping our emotions in check. When we become offended and react out of emotion, it highlights our bad behavior instead of keeping the focus on the real issue at hand. This ends up blurring the content/meaning of the message. The book has challenged me in a unique way, teaching me not to let others' behaviors dictate my own behavior.
What’s something you’re currently excited about at the center? I’m incredibly excited to see BAM’s Social Success Series grow and thrive. I believe everyone needs social skills training. From learning how to introduce yourself and ask the right questions to mastering the art of listening, these are all valuable skills that can make a huge difference. I hope the success of this series will benefit students with disabilities and allow the series to extend to the wider campus community.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
For my superpower, I’d want the ability to calm anxiousness. Many of our students deal with anxiety, which can be debilitating. It can often keep them from completing important tasks or moving forward in their academic journey. I would love it if my presence would soothe their nerves and help them take those necessary steps for success.

Meet the DRC
Meet Sarahi Barajas, Access Specialist at the Disability Resource Center!
We’re thrilled to introduce Sarahi, a dedicated member of the Disability Resource Center team. With a background in therapy and a passion for higher education, Sarahi is eager to support students in their academic journey. After years in mental health, she was inspired to combine her experience with her love for education, making the Disability Resource Center the perfect place for her to make an impact.
What do you love most about your role at the Disability Resource Center?
As an Access Specialist, Sarahi plays a key role in empowering students by providing a space where they can openly discuss their challenges. “The most fulfilling aspect is helping students access the support they need... I’m here to foster a safe and supportive environment for their success.”
What advice would you give students who are hesitant to seek support?
“Many students aren't aware of the full range of services we offer, often thinking accommodations are limited to things like test-taking or note-taking. My advice? Schedule an appointment and see what support is available. I remind them that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Taking that first step is the most important part!"
A fun fact about Sarahi!
Did you know? Sarahi loves to dance! "I used to compete in Bachata and Salsa, and dancing has always been a huge part of my life. My dad taught me at a young age, and we even competed together in father-daughter dance competitions. Outside of dancing, I’m passionate about running and staying active. Oh, and I’m a huge Harry Potter fan!"
Outside of work, what do you like to do for fun?
When she’s not helping students, Sarahi enjoys spending quality time with her husband and their dog. They often have quiet evenings together watching shows or hiking.
What book or resource has influenced you in your work?
A book that’s been particularly meaningful to me is The Body Keeps the Score, which explores the impact of trauma on both the body and mind, especially in cases of PTSD. Another insightful read is My Body Is Not Enough by Stephanie Su, which focuses on complex PTSD. These resources have deepened my understanding of trauma's long-term effects. I also enjoy the Where Should We Begin? podcast by Esther Perel, where she skillfully navigates both couples and individual therapy.
What’s something you’re currently excited about at the center?
Sarahi is excited to lead workshops for extended hours. She is currently looking towards DIY stress balls and heat warmer workshops to help students relax.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
“I’d love to fly!" I absolutely love to travel, and flying would make it so much easier to visit different places. I’ve been to New York and Hawaii many times, and I’d love to be able to visit those places even more often.
Student Spotlight
Jason Coen
As part of the Disability Resource Center’s efforts to highlight student voices, we are excited to introduce our Student Spotlight series. Each month, we will feature a student who shares their experiences, challenges, and successes at Cal Poly Pomona.
This month, we are featuring Jason Coen, a fifth-year double major in Communications and Computer Science, who has found ways to navigate college while advocating for themself and others.
My name is Jason Coen, and I’m a fifth-year double major in Communications and Computer Science. Throughout my time at Cal Poly Pomona, I’ve faced challenges as a student with a disability, but I’ve also found ways to navigate them with the support of the Disability Resource Center and my professors.
One of the biggest struggles for me has been notetaking and keeping track of due dates. To help with this, I’ve used the notetaking services provided by the DRC, which has been a huge help in making sure I don’t miss important information in my classes. I’ve also relied on different organizational tools to stay on top of my assignments and deadlines.
There was one experience in particular that really made a difference for me. I was in a demonology class, and a group project went completely wrong. Without me even having to ask, my professor recognized the situation and offered me an extension. That small act of understanding meant a lot because it showed me that some faculty really do care and are willing to be flexible when students are struggling.
If I could give advice to professors and administrators about supporting students with disabilities, it would be to be more flexible and open-minded. I’ve noticed that a lot of professors stick to very rigid policies, and when students fall behind due to unexpected challenges, there’s little room for discussion. Everyone is going through something, and what might seem easy for one student could be extremely difficult for another. A little understanding can go a long way.
When it comes to advocating for myself, I’ve found that setting up meetings during office hours is the best way to communicate my needs. Having professors who are approachable and clear about their availability makes this process much easier.
I hope that sharing my experience encourages other students to seek out the resources available to them and not be afraid to ask for help. College can be challenging, but with the right support and a willingness to advocate for yourself, success is possible.

Meet the DRC
Meet Kalila Jimenez, Access Specialist at the Disability Resource Center!
We’re excited to introduce Kalila, one of the dedicated team members at the Disability Resource Center. With a diverse career background and a passion for higher education, Kalila found her calling in supporting students in meaningful ways. After working in mental health, she felt a deep desire to merge her experience with her interest in education, leading her to the Disability Resource Center.
What do you love most about your role at the Disability Resource Center?
As an Access Specialist, Kalila works closely with students to help them navigate and receive the accommodations they need for success. “I enjoy being in an environment filled with caring individuals who all want to support students.”
What advice would you give students who are hesitant to seek support?
“If you're unsure about reaching out for support, I encourage you to apply and see what’s available to you. We’re here for you and genuinely want to help you succeed.”
A fun fact about Kalila!
Did you know? Kalila has only one kidney!
Outside of work, what do you like to do for fun?
When she’s not helping students, Kalila enjoys a variety of activities. She loves going thrifting, attending comedy clubs, visiting Disneyland, and going to the movies.
What book or resource has influenced you in your work?
The book Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl had a profound impact on Kalila during grad school. It’s about finding purpose and meaning even in the most challenging times, a theme she brings into her work every day.
What’s something you’re currently excited about at the center?
Kalila is excited to lead workshops for late-night events, with a special focus on a journaling workshop she’s currently working on. She’s passionate about creating spaces where students can reflect and grow.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
“I’d love the ability to fly. It would make traveling so much easier, and I’d be able to visit places like Paris, London, or Japan; traveling the world at no cost!”
