Testing Accommodations
Overview
Test Accommodations serve to ensure students with disabilities are provided an equitable opportunity to demonstrate their competency of the exam material with minimal interference from their disability. Test accommodations apply to quizzes, pop quizzes, exams, tests and final exams.
Test Accommodation may include:
- Extended time
- Distraction-reduced test environment
- Assistive technology (e.g., screen reader, CCTV)
- Accessible format (e.g., Word, enlarged text)
The DRC works in partnership with the instructor to ensure that a student’s accommodation needs are met. Instructors are expected to provide all test accommodations as prescribed by the DRC. Test accommodations apply to quizzes, pop quizzes, tests, exams and final exams. However, if the instructor is unable to accommodate the student, the student should submit a test request and DRC will administer the test on the instructor’s behalf. Detailed information is available in the Testing section of the DRC Policies and Procedures webpage.
Steps to use Test Accommodations
- DRC student submits an Accommodation Request through , selecting Test Accommodations for each class in which they’re needed. This will request all test accommodations for which the student is eligible.
- DRC emails a Notification of Accommodation to each instructor about two weeks prior to the term, or within one business day for subsequent requests.
- DRC student confirms with instructor that they will provide accommodations for specific test.*
- If instructor is unable to provide test accommodations, student must submit an exam request through DRC Online Services.*
*Students are responsible for making advance arrangements to use their testing accommodations. This begins with requesting accommodations for specific test with sufficient notice to their instructor or DRC. This allows preparation time for the instructor to provide accommodations; or allows coordination time for the DRC to proctor on the instructor’s behalf.
Important Information
In-Person Exams
- In-person exams (physical or electronic format exam) are those which are administered in an in-person classroom setting.
- Students should contact their instructors regarding providing accommodations for specific for in-person exams, including extending time for online exams (i.e., Canvas).
- If the instructor is unable to provide accommodations for in-person exams, DRC will proctor the exam on the instructor's behalf. Student must submit an exam request through DRC Online Services for DRC to proctor the exam.
Remote Exams
- Remote exams are given outside of the classroom and are not administered in-person. All students in the class are expected to provide their own equipment and identify their own location to take the exam.
- Students should remind their instructor to apply their extended time before each exam.
- For remote exams that the instructor proctors: if the instructor is unable to provide test accommodations, DRC will proctor the exam on the instructor's behalf. Student must submit an exam request through DRC Online Services in order for DRC to proctor the exam.
- For asynchronous and/or non-proctored remote exams: DRC does not provide proctoring services. However, DRC is available to assist the student or instructor in setting up accommodations for exams.
Once it has been determined that an instructor cannot provide testing accommodations, the DRC student will need to submit an Test Request through .
Guidelines:
- DRC students must submit test requests 5 business days before the class takes the test. Finals week exams must be requested by the Monday of the 14th week of the semester. If a test is requested less than 5 business days’ notice, DRC cannot guarantee that testing accommodations can be provided.
- If a test date changes, students must modify the test request on myDRC by changing the date or time.
- Schedule time of the test must overlap with when the class is taking the test. Exceptions include: test time is outside of DRC office hours, extended time would overlap with another class, or student is approved for make-up exams as an accommodation.
The scheduled test time must overlap with when the class is taking the test, with the following exceptions:
- The class test time is outside of DRC office hours;
- The extended time would overlap with student’s other classes or tests;
- The student is approved for make-up exams as an accommodation and has established an agreement with the instructor detailing the expectations for make-up exams, and the requested exam time complies with that agreement.
- If extended time overlaps with another class, contact DRC Testing (drctesting@cpp.edu) prior to the test day (DRC recommends at least 2 business days prior) to arrange for alternate testing time.
- Please check that the scheduled test duration is correct when you start the exam. If testing accommodations have not been applied (such as extended time) at start of exam, stop testing* and contact DRC Testing (drctesting@cpp.edu) immediately. This situation is more difficult to resolve if student continues testing or completes the exam without the appropriate accommodations.
*Note: student will not be penalized for this.
It is recommended that students arrive ten minutes before each scheduled exam. Additional study time is not permitted, nor is additional time added for late arrivals, or for students who do not finish within their allotted time. Both DRC and the student share the responsibility of monitoring the exam end time. Food and drink (except for water) and personal electronic devices (including smart watches) are not permitted in the test area. If students need headphones they need to bring their own wired headphones (Bluetooth not permitted).
