About Me

Dr. Alan Waxman is a landscape designer and assistant professor at 六色网, Pomona. He researches the future of cities in their ancient centers and their nascent edges, considering how vegetation and language are an index of marginalization and a means of participatory action.  His agency Ecosocial Design, , works within locations of risk for health equity, with built work in Hangzhou, Brooklyn, and collaborations with Pinoleville Pomo Nation, Tolowa Nation, Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians, Sogorea Te, Yakama Nation, Kyoto City Department of Urban Planning, Myoshinji Temple, and others. His work is featured in Landscape Architecture Magazine, Architect’s Newspaper, designboom, and is on the cover of Herrington’s Landscape Theory in Design. He has worked on NYC parks with QRP, Sorkin studio in China; and has taught for Harvard GSD (Project Link), UO, Center for Court Innovation, Mark Morris Dance Group, and UC Berkeley LAEP. He has published articles for the Journal of Urban Design and Mental Health, New York Academy of Medicine, the Urban Design Forum, Pew, and the River Field Studies Network. His dissertation, “An Atlas For Land Back,” considers how colonial economics are embodied in sites of trauma, providing measures of collective healing. He received his PhD in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at UC Berkeley and his Master in Landscape architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
