Cal Poly Pomona has renewed its long-term vision for future physical improvements of the campus through the adoption of the 2040 Campus Master Plan Update.

The plan is a roadmap for facilities and infrastructure to support the university’s mission, values, and strategic and academic goals. It focuses on a few key areas:

Community-Driven Vision

Planning and outreach efforts began in 2017, led primarily by the Division of Administrative Affairs, and included a comprehensive assessment of 115 buildings, review by the Master Plan Advisory Committee and President’s Cabinet, environmental review, as well as engagement through campus open forums, stakeholder meetings and multi-day workshops.

Focused working sessions addressed specific issues, such as instructional spaces, student housing, proposed project sequencing and the capital improvement plan. In all, more than 500 students, faculty, staff and community members contributed to the master planning process.

“The Campus Master Plan is a critical foundation that will guide how Cal Poly Pomona grows and evolves to meet the needs of students, faculty, staff and our larger community,” said Matthew Whinery, senior associate vice president for Facilities Planning & Management. “While the master plan provides recommendations for anticipated facilities and projects, it is not a guaranteed blueprint for construction. Instead, it provides a framework to allocate facility resources to best support student success.”

In July, the plan was formally presented to the CSU Board of Trustees and received approval.

Using the 2040 Master Plan

Faculty, staff, students and university stakeholders are invited to review the 2040 Campus Master Plan Update website, which includes the plan and FAQs. The website has more information on the planning process, Environmental Impact Report, timeline and documents.

The plan is an especially important resource as divisions and departments discuss and make plans for their future needs, such as space and locations on campus, parking and transportation, integrating new technologies, health and wellness, campus life, and events and activities.
