Build trust, respect, and shared understanding
Roommate Agreement Process
Roommate Agreements help set the foundation for a respectful and comfortable living environment. They encourage open communication and shared understanding, aligning with the spirit of the Student Housing License Agreement.
Sample Roommate Agreement
Want to see what a Roommate Agreement looks like? We offer two separate samples — one for residents of the Suites and another for residents of the Traditional and Residential Halls. These examples give you a better idea of the topics you’ll cover and the types of conversations you’ll have with your roommate. It’s a helpful starting point as you prepare for your RA-guided discussion.

Working Through It Together
Navigating Conflict with your Roommate
We understand that for many residents, this may be the first time living on campus, sharing a room, or learning how to communicate with someone new. Residents play an active role in shaping their shared living environment and are encouraged to reach out to available support resources if any roommate issues arise.

- Talking about issues may feel uncomfortable, but growth happens outside of the comfort zone
- You have resources to help you address issues that arise
5 Steps for working through conflict
Follow these five steps to better understand, address, and resolve conflict with your roommate in a respectful and constructive way.
At move-in
Each resident completes a roommate agreement with their RA within the first few weeks of move in to discuss boundaries, expectations of a shared living space, and communication styles.
Throughout the year
Roommates are responsible for discussing and adapting the agreement as needed to promote a comfortable environment
We recommend scheduling a time to talk 1:1 in-person with your roommate/s if you are noticing issues arising. If you need advice on how to approach the conversation, you may reach out to your RA
If this is your first time sharing a room or you may not feel comfortable talking to a roommate you are getting to know, your Resident Advisors (RA) are here to help!
Options of Support:
- Chat & Report
Find a time to meet and report the issue to your Resident Advisor (RA) prior to outreach to your Area Coordinator. Your Resident Advisor (RA) will take note of what you shared and provide options to help resolve the issue.
If you feel you are in immediate assistance after-hours, please contact your Resident Advisor (RA) On Duty. - Advice
If you need help approaching how to talk to your roommate/s or do not feel the issues were resolved during your conversation with your roommate/s, the next steps is Resident Advisor (RA) intervention. RAs can either provide advice on how to approach the conversation again or facilitate a mediation.
To reach your RA, visit the contact page:
We understand people may initially hesitate to schedule a mediation because they either do not know what it entails or because talking about problems may feel uncomfortable. This is how we can help.
What is a mediation?
Meditations are facilitated conversations by the Resident Advisor (RA) to help roommates engage in a respectful and neutral dialogue to resolve issues in a room, through revisiting communication, boundaries, and expectations of the room and your Roommate Agreement.
Scheduling a mediation
To schedule a meditation, let your roommate know you would like one, and reach out to your Resident Advisor (RA) with dates and time frames you both are able to meet with your Resident Advisor (RA).
Once you’ve talked with your roommate again, or had a mediation, continue to keep your Resident Advisor (RA) looped in if you see positive changes in your room. If there are minimal to no changes, please detail what is still actively occurring in the room, so we can further problem solve with you.
Your Area Coordinator (AC) can further discuss with you alternative options to resolve conflict in your room after you have consulted with your Resident Advisor (RA).
Residents are expected to have made a reasonable amount of effort to resolve the issues within their room prior to requesting an alternative solution or move.
