Digital History

PolyX and More!

Digital history -- the use of computer-assisted technologies to access sources, analyze the past, and present it in a compelling and engaging way -- is a core part of the ÁùÉ«Íø History experience. Every History major takes a Digital Research Project course (4494, 4495, 4496, or 4497) -- these classes have all earned the status of being "PolyX," or a Signature Polytechnic Experience, class. Browse the links below to find out more about Digital History at ÁùÉ«Íø! (Pictured: the title page from a project about the origins of facial reconstruction surgery, created in ArcGIS StoryMaps for Dr. Rob Lewis's HST 4495 class, which focuses on the First World War).

Doing Digital History @ÁùÉ«Íø

Digital history at Cal Poly Pomona can be all sorts of things! It might be a family history research project that ends up as a video, incorporating images, audio clips and more! It might be a webpage created in StoryMaps that integrates GIS mapping, primary source images, and video! It also might be a detailed exploration of the Trans-Atlantic Slavery database that tracks ship voyages and people across four centuries! You'll find some links below to recent student projects that won the Department's Digital History Prize, as well as materials about other Digital History initatives at ÁùÉ«Íø.
