B.M. Pedagogy (Pre-Credential) | For Current Students

Become by Teaching, Leading, and Inspiring Through Music

If you’re passionate about music and want to make an impact in the classroom, the B.M. in Pedagogy (Pre-Credential) Option is your first step toward becoming a music teacher in California’s K–12 schools. This option satisfies the state’s Subject Matter Competence requirement for a teaching credential and prepares you to lead, inspire, and educate the next generation through music.

You’ll build a strong foundation in musicianship while gaining hands-on experience in classroom and ensemble settings. After completing your bachelor’s degree, you’ll be eligible to apply for the post-baccalaureate Single Subject Credential Program—an additional year focused on teaching methods, educational psychology, and the legal and social dynamics of schools.

Dr. Janine Riveire, our dedicated faculty advisor, works closely with the College of Education to guide you through both the undergraduate program and the transition into the credential program. This pathway also opens doors to careers in after-school programs, community organizations, private teaching, and graduate study in fields like music therapy.

Our alumni are leading classrooms across California—and many come back to mentor ÁùÉ«Íø students during their clinical practice. With the Pedagogy (Pre-Credential) Option, you won’t just study music. You’ll learn how to teach it with purpose and heart.

Transferring Into the B.M. Pedagogy (Pre-Credential) Option

Current music students who enter under another option, such as General Studies, can transfer into the B.M. in Pedagogy (Pre-Credential) by completing an audition and interview. The audition on your primary instrument or voice helps demonstrate your musical foundation, and all styles are welcome—choose what best showcases your skills. You’ll also be invited to an interview, where we’ll get to know you, your goals, and how this path supports your future as a music educator. Contact one of the faculty advisors below for more information.

Single Subject Credential - 2 Semesters

Many Pedagogy students choose to continue at Cal Poly Pomona for their Single Subject Credential—and for good reason.

As a senior, you can take up to four prerequisite credential courses during your undergraduate studies, helping you fast-track the credential in just two additional semesters.

Stay connected with Dr. Janine Riveire, the Single Subject Advisor, who will guide you through every step and keep you up to date on requirements, deadlines, and next steps.
