The Audition Process Explained
While each component of the audition is important, we know it is common for students to have imbalances in their abilities. We take a “big picture” approach in our evaluation process. Each component of the audition – including a short interview – helps us assess your overall potential as a musician.
- You are required to audition in order to determing placement within the Bachelor of Arts, Music Industry Studies program.
- You will get a 15 minute audition slot. Including your setup and take down time.
- You should select material for the audition which best demonstrates your abilities, following the guidelines for repertoire below.
Be Prepared to Present the Following
- Scales/Etudes
- Instrumentalists
- Two-octave major scales in different registers
- Vocalists
- One-octave major scale (ascending and descending) in a comfortable range.
- Percussionists that do not play mallets must perform one solo or etude.
- Instrumentalists
- Two contrasting musical works of your choosing
- One that demonstrates technical facility
- One that is more lyrical in character
- Past examples have included
- An original song for piano and voice
- Original digital audio productions, with an accompanying description of the creator’s process a classical piece or etude
- An operatic aria
- A singer/pianist performance of a popular song
- A drumset performance
- An original singer-songwriter song for guitar and voice
- A fingerpicking tune
- You will be asked to sing, in your comfortable range, the opening phrase of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"
- (Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, How I wonder what you are.)
